Our one-day Ice Axe clinic is for anyone who’s looking to climb Mt Shasta via Avalanche Gulch or West Face, but wants to dial in their skills beforehand. It’s a perfect course for climbers or hikers who want to learn about the essential tools and techniques of climbing snow while using an ice axe and crampons. This clinic is developed to give you the most important information you need to climb some of the most popular routes found on Mt Shasta, Mt Hood, and other classic non-glaciated routes of the Pacific Northwest. Topics include: Walking with the Ice axe, ice axe self-belay and self-arrest (from multiple positions), crampon fitting and adjustment, walking in crampons, flat-footing, French technique, German technique, using the front points, and multiple other widely used climbing steps. We will also display and practice proper glissading technique and discuss important considerations before attempting this on a climb.
