Wild & Scenic Rogue River Trail FAQ

Rogue River Trail Trip FAQ

1. What is the difficulty level of the hike, and what kind of physical shape do I need?
The trail is considered moderate, with daily elevation gains and drops around 1,000 feet. Terrain varies, including flat sections as well as uphill and downhill stretches. Hikers should be in good physical condition and capable of covering roughly 10 miles per day. The trip is raft-supported, allowing you to ride part or all of the day if needed.

2. How do rafting and hiking work together?
Our trips are raft-supported, so you won’t carry overnight gear or heavy packs. One raft transports all overnight equipment to the evening camp, while another follows near the hiking trail for lunch stops or optional rafting during the day.

3. What’s included in the trip cost?
Your trip includes:

  • Comfortable overnight gear (tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad)

  • Experienced raft and trail guides

  • All on-river meals from lunch on Day 1 to lunch on the last day

  • One night at Paradise Lodge

  • Transportation from Galice to the trail start and back

4. How is gear transported between campsites?
You only carry what’s needed for a day hike (layers, water, snacks, sunscreen, bug repellent). All other gear is transported by raft. You’ll have lunch stops along the river, and you can hop in the boat if you want a break.

5. What kind of camping accommodations are provided along the river?
We provide spacious, comfortable tents, sleeping pads, and sleeping bags. Meals are freshly prepared riverside, often served under a covered dining area. Camps feel more like a traveling bed and breakfast than traditional camping.

6. What can I expect at Paradise Lodge?
Paradise Lodge offers comfortable, remote accommodations: hotel-style rooms with beds, showers, bathrooms, riverside decks, a dining room, and a bar. It’s one of the most luxurious lodges along the Rogue River Trail.

7. What kind of food is served, and are dietary restrictions accommodated?
You’ll enjoy freshly prepared, high-quality meals, including three-course dinners with wine, beer, and coffee or tea. Our guides are skilled chefs, and menus are updated each year. Dietary restrictions are accommodated with advanced notice.

8. Do I need prior experience in rafting or hiking?
No prior experience is required. Good physical fitness is needed for approximately 10 miles of hiking per day, with some uphill and downhill sections. Raft support allows flexibility for all fitness levels.

9. What is the group size and guide-to-participant ratio?
We limit trips to a maximum of 18 guests due to wilderness protections. The trip includes trail and raft guides: up to 6 guests per trail guide and at least 2 raft guides (more for groups larger than 12).

10. What wildlife might I encounter?
The Rogue River is abundant with wildlife. Typical sightings include Bald Eagles, Osprey, turtles, heron, bear, deer, otters, and more.

11. What gear should I bring, and what is provided?
We provide almost everything except personal clothing, a headlamp, and a toothbrush. A detailed packing list is supplied before the trip.

12. What is the weather like in late September/early October?
Weather can vary from cool mornings (upper 40s–low 50s °F) to warm afternoons (mid-70s–low 80s °F), with occasional rain. Cooler temperatures bring beautiful fall colors and abundant wildlife activity.

13. How do we get to the trail, and what transportation is provided afterward?
The trip starts in Galice, OR, where vehicles are parked. We transport guests 15 minutes downriver to the trailhead. At the end of the hike, private transportation returns you to Galice.

14. Will there be opportunities for swimming or fishing?
Yes! The Rogue River is ideal for swimming, waterfall soaking, and fishing. Campsites include great areas for both activities.

15. Are there age restrictions?
We recommend participants be 16 years or older due to hiking distance and terrain. Younger hikers may be accommodated on a private basis—please contact us to discuss options.
