Mt Russell is a massive peak that sits just north of Mt Whitney. It’s the 7th tallest peak in California, and is known for having some of the best climbing found in the Sierra Nevada. Climbing in the Sierra Nevada is known around the country for its huge diversity of routes. Mt Russell, as far as Sierra Nevada climbing goes, offers dramatic ridgelines, quality alpine rock, and some of the best technical routes in the range.

Routes include:

  • East Ridge 4th Class – Widely considered the best 4th class route in the Sierra.
  • Fishhook Arete, 5.9 – A stunning arete twists around the Southern boundary of the summit, with nine pitches of alpine climbing.
  • Mithril Dihedral, 5.10a – Climbing the southwest corner of Mt Russell to the west of the Fishhook Arete.

Mt Muir rises just south of Mt Whitney and offers an excellent objective. When thinking of a great Sierra Nevada climbing objective that pairs perfectly with a Whitney ascent, there is nothing better. Approached via the Whitney Trail, the climb features a short but exciting section of 3rd class scrambling to reach the summit. For those seeking a more technical adventure, the East Face presents a dramatic 1,400-foot cliff, with the North side of the East Buttress offering classic 4th and  5th class climbing.  Because of the protections and restrictions around the Mt Whitney area, special permission is required from the Forest Service for guided ascents.  If you’d like to learn more, or schedule your custom climb, please contact us directly via email or by phone so we can discuss options and dates.  Please note, that we do schedule around the availability of our guides, so the earlier you contact us, the more options we’ll have available.

White Mountain is the tallest peak in California’s White Mountains range and the third-highest in the state.  Elevation wise, it sits behind Mt Whitney (1st) and Mt Williamson (2nd). It’s unique among California fourteeners, in that it is the only peak of this height outside the Sierra Nevada, Rocky Mountains, or Cascade range in the contiguous United States. Climbers can choose from several routes, including a day hike to the summit just past the altitude research station or longer ridge climbs approaching from the North and West.  Our standard White Mountain climb offers the single day route.  However, for those interested in more time on the mountain or a more relaxed pace, we do offer a 2 day option. The are tons of great areas to enjoy on a Sierra Nevada climbing trip, but few as approachable, enjoyable, and accessible as White Mountain.
