Join us for a more adventurous attempt at Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft) via the less-traveled Mountaineer’s Route. Our Mt. Whitney guided climb offers a challenging alpine experience but is suitable for beginner mountaineers or intermediate backpackers seeking routes with fewer people and more adventure. Unlike the popular Whitney Trail, the Mountaineer’s Route is less crowded, more technical, and offers great views of the Whitney Massif and Mt. Russell along with the surrounding Sierra Nevada range. Our 3-day itinerary allows for better acclimatization, more instruction, and a fairly leisurely pace to maximize your summit chances. While the route is suitable for beginners, it involves steep off-trail hiking, scrambling, and sometimes the use of crampons and an ice axe. In the steep upper sections, we’ll use a rope and harnesses for your protection. Our professional guides, 40+ years of experience in providing guided climbs on Mt Whitney, and deep ties to the local area all contribute to our guests’ experience and safety.

Day 1 – Approach to High Camp
Our trip begins in Lone Pine with a morning pack check at the SWS Mountain Guides office. This is where we review gear, make sure everyone is prepared, and top off water before heading to the trailhead. Once ready, we drive to Whitney Portal and start up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek.
The approach climbs steadily through forest and has some creek crossings along with granite sections before reaching the Ebersbacher Ledges, a short area of scrambling along the canyon wall. From there, we continue past Lower Boy Scout Lake and move higher into the basin of Upper Boy Scout Lake at about 11,000 feet. This is where we set up camp for the night. After camp is built and everyone has settled in, we share dinner, review the plan for summit day, and turn in early for rest.
Day 2 – Summit Day
We begin before sunrise with breakfast and final preparations. From camp at Upper Boy Scout Lake, the route heads toward Iceberg Lake. In the early season, snow is often encountered at this point if not below camp, and climbers will put on crampons and carry ice axes as the terrain steepens. Later in the summer, the approach to Iceberg Lake is typically clear of snow until the higher elevations.
From Iceberg Lake, the route climbs the main gully toward the Mountaineer’s Notch. Early season, teams will be in crampons and may rope up here. By mid-summer, when the gully is more likely dry, this is where we begin climbing toward the Notch and finally the “Final 400,” the steepest section of the route leading directly to the summit plateau.
Once above the Final 400, it’s a short walk across the plateau to the summit of Mt. Whitney at 14,505 feet. After spending some time on top, we descend the same route back to Upper Boy Scout Lake. Summit day is demanding, often taking 14 or more hours round trip. Back at camp, dinner and rest round out the day.
Day 3 – Return to the Trailhead
The final morning has a more relaxed pace. We share breakfast, often with time for a second cup of coffee, before breaking down camp. From Upper Boy Scout Lake, the descent follows the same route down through the ledges and the North Fork drainage to Whitney Portal, usually arriving by early afternoon.

A: Altitude is one of the biggest challenges on Mount Whitney. At 14,505 feet, you may experience shortness of breath, headaches, or fatigue. Our itineraries are designed to help with acclimatization, but we recommend you arrive well-rested and, if possible, spend time at elevation before your climb if possible. Remember you are only going to be at 14,505 ft for about 30 minutes. - Q: What gear do I need for a Whitney climb?
A: Depending on the season, gear can include mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, helmet, harness, appropriate layers, gloves, hat, sunglasses, and personal items.
