Our Pro 1 Avalanche course is offered in partnership with the American Avalanche Institute (AAI). It’s the first step in the professional avalanche education track, designed for those moving beyond recreational training into roles where formal decision-making, hazard evaluation, and risk communication are critical.
The curriculum is built for those heading into snow safety careers. Perfect for ski patrollers, avalanche control workers, assistant heli and cat ski guides, DOT or highway avalanche crews, and those working with avalanche advisories or public land agencies. Over five days on Mt. Shasta, you’ll take part in daily ops meetings, gather and analyze field data, assess avalanche risk, and practice travel and terrain management with a pro team of instructors from both SWS Mountain Guides and AAI.
This is pass/fail course that includes a strong field component with an emphasis on real-world application. Whether you’re working toward a career as an avalanche professional or simply need the Pro 1 for your next step in the industry, this is the class to get you there.
