Whether you’re stepping onto a summer snowfield on Mt. Shasta, trekking through Nepal’s high-altitude summer passes, or braving bitter winter conditions in the Sierra, UV radiation at elevation demands serious protection. Up here, sun protection isn’t just about avoiding a cosmetic burn—it’s vital mountain safety.
Why High Elevation and Snow Are a Double Hazard
When you climb above the tree line, two environmental factors dramatically increase your radiation exposure:
- Thinner Air (Altitude): UV intensity increases by roughly 10% to 12% for every 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) of elevation gain. At 10,000 feet, you are receiving significantly higher doses of solar radiation than at sea level.
- Albedo (Snow Reflection): Fresh snow acts like a massive parabolic mirror, reflecting up to 80% to 90% of UV rays back up at you.
Instead of receiving light only from above, you’re being hit from the sides, below your chin, inside your nostrils, and beneath your eyelids.
Protecting Your Eyes: Preventing Snow Blindness
Snow blindness (photokeratitis) is essentially a sunburn on your cornea. It is painful, temporarily blinding, and entirely preventable.

Pro Tip: Never rely on everyday casual sunglasses on a glaciated peak. The lack of side protection and lower light filtering leave you exposed to severe glare and strain.
Skin & Lip Defense: Summer vs. Winter Strategies
- Summer High-Altitude Climbs & Treks
Warm summer temperatures often trick climbers into shedding layers, but high solar radiation demands full coverage.
- Physical Sun Barriers First: Wear a lightweight, breathable UPF 50+ sun hoody, a broad-brimmed hat or baseball cap paired with a neck gaiter (buff), and lightweight sun gloves. Physical barriers never wash off with sweat.
- Mineral Sunscreen (Zinc Oxide / Titanium Dioxide): Apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant formula to all exposed skin—especially under the tip of your nose, beneath your chin, and behind your ears where reflected snow light strikes.
- Lip Protection: Use an SPF 30+ or SPF 50 lip balm containing zinc. Standard lip balm without SPF acts like baby oil and accelerates burning. Reapply every hour.
- Winter Mountaineering & Cold Weather
Winter brings sub-zero temperatures and freezing winds, changing the rules of skin defense.
- Beware of Freeze Risk: Chemical sunscreens with high water content can feel icy or cause skin irritation in extreme cold. Opt for rich, water-free mineral pastes or zinc sticks.
- Full Face Coverage: Cold air combined with intense sun dries skin out fast. Combine a thermal balaclava or face mask with fitted ski goggles to eliminate exposed skin during high-wind ridge traverses.
- Reapplication Management: It’s easy to skip reapplication when you’re wearing thick gloves and layers. Keep your sun stick and lip balm in an accessible chest pocket so you can apply them at short break stops without taking off your packs.
The Guide’s Reapplication Routine
To stay protected out on the trail, follow the “2-Hour Rule”:
- Lather up before leaving camp: Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before you step onto the snow.
- Set routine reapplication stops: Reapply every 2 hours (or every 60–90 minutes if sweating heavily).
- Hydrate & Cool: UV exposure accelerates dehydration and fatigue. Pair your sun breaks with electrolyte intake.
