As winter approaches, many backcountry travelers begin thinking about how to sharpen their skills and prepare for another winter season in the mountains. We teach our students that avalanche knowledge and rescue drills is not something you learn once and set aside until you need it. The snowpack is constantly changing, the science continues to evolve, and the decisions we make in avalanche terrain depend on how sharp our skills remain. That is why we are excited to introduce our new Avalanche Level 1 Refresher Course, launching this winter in Bear Valley.
Our single-day course is designed for those who have already completed an Avalanche Level 1 course but want to revisit the fundamentals, strengthen decision-making skills, and get up to speed with the latest practices in avalanche safety. Over the years, we’ve developed and refined our curriculum through our Level 1, Level 2, and Avalanche Rescue programs. The refresher draws from all of these, giving students a focused and practical day of learning that bridges experience with current avalanche science.
Led by our professional guides and instructors, this course blends classroom discussions, and presentations with field-based training. You’ll revisit terrain assessment, snowpack analysis, and rescue techniques, while also exploring how new technology and updated industry standards are shaping the way we approach avalanche education today. Whether it’s been a few seasons since your Level 1 or you simply want a stronger foundation as you prepare for your Pro 1 or Level 2 course, this refresher offers a hands-on way to rebuild confidence, reduce your uncertainty, and return to the backcountry with additional clarity and skill.
We’re looking forward to seeing students, both familiar faces and new ones, join us in Bear Valley for this exciting addition to our avalanche education program. It’s a chance to take what you already know, refine it with guidance from experienced instructors, and head into the season prepared for the challenges and rewards that winter brings.
