When preparing for a climb or ski on Mount Shasta (14,179 ft) or Mount Whitney (14,505 ft), or just hiking into the mountains, checking the standard weather app on your phone won’t cut it.
A sunny 75°F forecast for the town of Mount Shasta or Lone Pine often hides sub-freezing temperatures, 50 mph summit winds, and severe wind chill on the upper mountain. Understanding how to interpret mountain weather forecasts is one of the most critical skills you can build before starting your climb or trek.
Here is how our guide team breaks down mountain forecasts, the tools we use, and how you should evaluate conditions ahead of your climb.
1. The Core Rule: Elevation Changes Everything
As elevation increases, air pressure drops, causing air to expand and cool—a process known as the lapse rate. On average, temperatures drop by roughly 3.5°F to 5.4°F for every 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
  • If it is 65°F at the Whitney Portal trailhead (8,360 ft), expect roughly 35°F to 40°F at the summit (14,505 ft)—before factoring in wind.
  • Always check the forecast for the exact elevation and aspect of your route, not just the nearest town.
2. Trusted Weather Resources & How to Use Them
Not all forecasting tools are built the same. We recommend using a combination of point forecasts, visual models, and specialized avalanche/mountain center discussions.
  • Best for: Pinpoint accuracy, detailed text discussions, and reliable elevation-specific modeling.
  • How to use it: Use the map interface to click directly on the summit or high camp (e.g., 50/50 Flat or Upper Boy Scout Lake or Trail Camp- all depending on your route). Scroll down on the right-hand side and click “Hourly Weather Forecast” to see hour-by-hour breakdowns of wind speeds, gusts, cloud cover, and precipitation potential.
  • Pro Tip: Look for the Area Forecast Discussion (AFD) linked at the bottom of the page. Meteorologists write these daily, highlighting forecast uncertainty, incoming pressure systems, and timing shifts.
  • Best for: Visualizing wind layers, jet stream positioning, and comparing forecasting models.
  • How to use it: Toggle between the ECMWF (European model), GFS (American model), and HRRR (high-resolution rapid refresh, great within 18–48 hours).
  • What to watch for: Set the altitude slider to 700 hPa (~10,000 ft) or 600 hPa (~14,000 ft) to see what the wind is doing at the summit level, rather than valley level.
  • Best for: Quick elevation-band snapshots (e.g., base, mid-mountain, summit).
  • The Caveat: Mountain-Forecast relies primarily on automated algorithmic interpolations from global models (such as GFS). It does not have a human meteorologist reviewing local terrain effects.
  • How to treat it: Use it as a quick secondary glance, but do not rely on it as your primary decision-maker, as it frequently underestimates summit wind events or misses rapid local mountain weather conditions.
❄️ Avalanche & Regional Centers (Essential Additions)
  • Mount Shasta Avalanche Center (shastaavalanche.org): An absolute gold standard during the winter and spring  climbing and skiing season.  It can be very valuable for information about climbing conditions in the spring and summer months. Their climbing advisory and weather synopsis provide crucial on-the-ground observations, snowpack stability reports, and wind patterns on Shasta. Warning: don’t just give it a glance; dig into the information contained in the forecasts and climbing information for a your preparation for your climb or ski
  • Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center (esavalanche.org): Excellent for Whitney and High Sierra approaches  during the winter and spring seasons, when snow conditions are present.
3. What to Look For: The Key Mountain Metrics
When reviewing the forecast 3–5 days out from your climb, focus on these critical variables:

Elevation where temperatures cross 32°F Determines whether precipitation falls as rain, sleet, or snow, and directly impacts snowpack crust/softness.
Afternoon Convective Potential
Summer thunderstorms High Sierra summer climbs often see “monsoonal flow” or afternoon buildup. Plan on alpine starts (leaving well before sunrise) to be off high ridges before 12:00–1:00 PM.
Trend Over 48 Hours
Is the system speeding up or slowing down? A storm arriving 6 hours earlier than predicted can change a summit window entirely.
4. Trust Your Guides & Stay Flexible
Mountain weather is dynamic. A forecast is a projection of probabilities, not a guarantee.
Our guide team monitors real-time weather stations, radar, and local pressure trends around the clock leading up to and during your climb. If weather requires us to adjust start times, alter route choices, or establish a conservative turnaround time, these decisions are always made with one priority in mind: your safety.
