A reliable headlamp allows a person to navigate, manage ropes, assess terrain, and respond to problems when daylight is gone. On alpine climbs, we start hours before sunrise, and delays, changing weather, or an emergency can easily extend the descent into darkness.
Key reasons include:
- Safety: Strong, reliable illumination helps identify hazards such as crevasses, loose rock, ice, and uneven terrain.
- Navigation: A good beam makes route-finding and reading terrain possible in darkness or poor visibility.
- Hands-free operation: Mountaineers need both hands available for climbing, belaying, rope work, equipment management, and assisting clients.
- Reliability: A dependable headlamp with good battery life reduces the risk of being caught in darkness.
- Group management: A climber’s light can help others in the their group follow the route and maintain visual contact.
- Emergency readiness: Extra brightness and battery capacity can become essential during an unexpected late descent, injury, or change in conditions.
Battery reliability, weather resistance, beam quality, ease of use, and backup capability are often more important than simply having the brightest possible lamp. While the rechargeable headlamps are a great idea what happens if the battery dies? Can the rechargeable battery be replaced in the field with alkaline batteries?
We prefer headlamps from either Black Diamond or Petzl. I have used the Black Diamond Storm headlamp for several years with no issues.
One last recommendation – Always, Always, carry extra batteries!!batteries!!
